How It All Began

Founded in 1923, the company Gebr. Brasseler produced the first rotary dental instruments under the Komet brand; the circumstances were anything but rosy. In addition to the generally prevailing inflation and unemployment, already established manufacturers made it difficult to enter the market by blocking the specialized trade.

But Komet quickly recognize the opportunities offered by direct sales, thus laying the foundation for close contact with its customers. The concept soon proved to be successful: Only a few years after publishing the first printed catalogs in Düsseldorf. We built connections with international markets where we presented ourselves as an up-and-coming, promising company

The brand name Komet was featured on the first advertising material. The idea for the brand name was born out of observing the first burs at work; when viewed in the light, the material removed by rotary instruments produces a tail that looks a lot like the tail of a comet in the sky. Today, the quality products made by Komet are synonymous with innovation, precision, and reliability – all over the world.

Komet was not spared from the ravages of the Second World War. The production facility in Düsseldorf lay in ruins. However, this was no reason for us to admit defeat: With ambition, courage, and hope, we focused rebuilding in 1943 in Lemgo, Germany, where we had found our new home.

The 1950s were booming with innovation: The economy had recovered from the consequences of the war and more and more young people were being systematically trained as skilled workers.

Komet took advantage of the economic upswing and established itself as a driving force for new products, new technologies, and the use of new materials. As one of the first manufacturers, we began producing instruments made of tungsten carbide as early as 1956. We made the material’s special cutting ability and durability available to our customers.

Komet achieved a lot in the past years. In addition to building an international brand identity, entering new markets, and modernizing our company, we have established ourselves as an expert at home and abroad – dentists and dental technicians around the world trust the quality of our products.

We have achieved all this by remaining true to our values. Apart from maintaining close contact with our customers, one thing is particularly close to our hearts: the constant strives to improve and develop our instruments to provide users and patients alike with the best possible treatment.

As a driving force in the dental industry, we reflect on numerous ideas and products that have changed dentistry. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the most effective of them in greater detail:

First tungsten carbide bur with staggered toothing

Komet has been manufacturing drills made of tungsten carbide since the 1950s. This material enables the production of instruments with sharper and more precise cutting edges. In 1980, our experts presented the first carbide drills with staggered toothing. The introduction of this new manufacturing technology made it possible to produce smooth-running dental instruments that remove dental material efficiently while leaving a smooth surface on the tooth

S-Diamonds

In 2001, Komet developed a time-saving solution for crown preparation: S-diamonds for gentle, yet efficient treatments. Thanks to the unique combination of a structured blank and coarse diamond grit, these instruments remove dental substance with great efficiency.

Tungsten carbide cutters, or rather, rotary instruments in general are part of the dental technicians daily routine. “We need high quality products that support us during our work and reliably deliver good results”, says dental technical Christian Schuchmann (Manager of the dental laboratory Teuber in Darmstadt, Germany).

Mr. Schuchmann, what is the percentage of non-precious metal restorations you work on as part of the daily routine at your laboratory?
At our laboratory, we work a lot with non-precious metal. For removable dentures, we prefer using a tried and proven non-precious metal in most cases, whereas about 70 % of fixed dentures are completely made of ceramics.

Did the percentage of non-precious metal restorations drop in the last few years?
Yes, definitely, but non-precious metal alloys are still a firm part of our work. Interestingly, the demand for telescope supported dentures made of non-precious metal is currently growing, often in combination with implants. That’s why we still need tungsten carbide cutters, and we are pleased to note that Komet is currently developing new, innovative instruments in this sector. We have been working for more than six months with the new tungsten carbide cutter SHAX which enabled us to once again optimize our work processes.

Do you use the casting technique when working on non-precious metal or do you prefer CAD/CAM supported methods?
… both. We have been producing fixed restorations according to CAD/CAM supported methods for approx. 20 years, including restorations made of non-precious metal. We now have a relatively large stock of machines and enjoy making use of digital technologies. Likewise, we are successfully using CAD/CAM systems in telescope technique and we have developed some milling parameters that produce an excellent fit between the primary and secondary part. In some cases, we proceed according to casting technique, for example when processing model cast work pieces. We use selective laser melting processes in some cases – which we outsource to external service providers, although we also cast our own frames, depending on the situation. But whatever production method we apply to finish the framework quickly, we always need high-performance tungsten carbide cutters.

You use the tungsten carbide cutter SHAX. Why is that?
We have been working with SHAX for more than six months now. As Beta users, we have the opportunity to already test a new cutter while it is still in the development phase. We have been enthusiastic Komet customers for a long time and we could not wait to see this new cutter. We wish to improve the work flows in all areas of our laboratory, so we were pleased to accompany the test phase and we were not disappointed.

Had you actually been looking for a new tungsten carbide cutter?
No, we were very happy with the “old“ tungsten carbide cutters made by Komet, but as an innovative dental laboratory, we are always on the lookout for new materials and optimized tools. We just wanted to find out more about the advertised “Revolution in work on non-precious metal” and therefore decided to give the new cutters a try. We have been working with Komet tools for many years and we just wanted to know if there is still room for improvement when it comes to trimming non-precious metal frameworks.

So what’s your impression? What does the new tungsten carbide cutter have to offer?
… a considerably better feeling during milling. The “notably improved substance removal“ advertised in the brochure is not just a marketing slogan, but reality. The cutters have an amazing ability to remove substance and they create much smoother surfaces. This is what distinguishes SHAX from any other tungsten carbide cutter we know. Working with this instrument is such fun. Milling feels as easy as child’s play because we need a lot less contact pressure to achieve a good result. You just let the cutter do all the work. This is not only gentle on the wrist, but also reduces the wear and tear of the laboratory hand piece. SHAX allows relaxed and efficient work – perfectly in line with our ideas of modern dental technology.

Do you use the new tungsten carbide cutters in any (given?) situation?
Yes, we do. We have been using the SHAX cutters for non-precious metal restorations ever since we introduced these instruments at our lab. Whether rough trimming or fine grinding – with its many different geometries, there is a SHAX cutter for every situation. The smaller geometries, for example, are perfectly suited for precise work on the inner surfaces of clasps and clasp shoulders. The larger geometries facilitate a tidy removal of casting sprues.

Are there any facts that support your experience? What exactly is it that SHAX does differently?
The distinguishing feature is the special blade geometry of the SHAX cutters. We had enquired about this beforehand and we find the background of this instrument very interesting. The new toothing is the product of a special production standard. Just like in dental technology, the technologies in tool making are subject to constant change. The product of SHAX cutters is based on the geometric data of a 3D model. That’s why the SHAX blade geometry cannot be compared to that of other tungsten carbide cutters. It is distinguished by the individual height, depth and angle of each tooth. According to the manufacturer, this improves the cutting behavior of the instrument. This is confirmed during day-to-day work by the dynamic and effective substance removal of the instrument and by the perfectly smooth surface finish created. The resulting finish is considerably finer so that the time required for polishing can be significantly reduced. Thanks to the perfectly prepared surface, we can achieve a mirror finish in record time by polishing with rubber polishers and polishing brushes.

Cross your heart: Is it worth changing to this new tungsten carbide cutter?
Definitely. At the start, we all focus on the quality of the result, and SHAX cutters really do achieve brilliant results every time. After a few months of use, another advantage becomes obvious. The new cutters last considerably longer than traditional non-precious metal cutters. Even if the instrument is subjected to heavy use, there is hardly any visible wear and tear of the blades. This makes them economical and cost-effective in use. You get more of a tool at the same price, if you like. In summary, we can work with the cutter for a longer period of time, we achieve a finer surface finish and we have great fun during work. For us, the change was definitely worth it.

You said that you have been working with Komet for a long time. What terms do you associate with the company?
… Quality, innovation and reliability. The tools made by the company simply work well. Whether diamond abrasives, tungsten carbide cutters, polishers or separating discs – the products are reliable and safe.

Every patient longs to have beautiful, straight teeth, and every dentist or orthodontist works to make this dream come true. Unfortunately, treatment is often not as straight-forward as expected and can involve lots of time and work.

The preparation prior to applying fixed buccal or lingual braces or popular aligners is often hampered by dental crowding, particularly in adult patients with misaligned teeth. The interproximal reduction of dental enamel, also known as IPR, is therefore an indispensable part of any orthodontic treatment.
Anyone who has ever removed dental enamel the traditional way knows what a hard job it can be. Manual IPR can take hours, exhausting both the dentist and the patient. This can put the patient’s patience to the test and strain the dentist’s wrists.

Save a full piece of time. IPR for teething with the Komet Kit.

The tedious and time-consuming manual method is typically performed using diamond coated strips with a honeycomb pattern. With this method, the dentist must keep checking how much substance has already been removed. It is not only extremely difficult to achieve an even reduction of the enamel with this method, but also very time consuming. In other words: Another typical case for Komet. We are always the answer to making daily life at the dental practice simpler, safer and more effective.

Dental crowding can be more easily treated with mechanical methods. To this end, we have a comprehensive range of innovative oscillating segment discs at your disposal.
With Komet, you can save up to a third of treatment time, and the physical strain on the dentist’s wrist is significantly relieved.

Developed in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. Jost-Brinkmann of the Charité Berlin, Komet’s IPR system of oscillating discs greatly increases the safety during stripping since the oscillating 60° segment discs have a minor pivot angle of 30°. The discs of Komet’s IPR system save space and provide an unobstructed view during enamel reduction, thus minimizing risk of injury to the soft tissue.

The advantages:

minimized risk of injury to soft tissues thanks to the oscillating function of the discs

perfect view and evacuation of chips thanks to the honeycomb pattern

less strain on the dentist during the treatment

greater comfort to the patient

faster and easier work to the benefit of the dentist

the required quantity of substance can be achieved with precision

The oscillating segment discs are available in the sizes that allow the removal of the usual quantity of enamel. They are used in the oscillating contra-angle OS30 provided by Komet.

Another professional IPR set was developed in cooperation with Dr. Thomas Drechsler. Tailor-made for use in combination with the oscillating segment discs, this set combines easier handling with an optimized clinical treatment, facilitating the work of orthodontists and dental assistants.

IPR Kit 4594

The oscillating discs come clearly arranged in a modular storage box with a practice-orientated design. Suitable for sterilization, this ergonomic storage box meets all criteria of efficiency and hygiene in dental practices.
Thanks to the various disc sizes and their logical arrangement in the storage box, inter-proximal accurate substance removal isguaranteed (i.e. 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 or 0.5 mm). A range of oscillating discs – coated on one or both sides – is available to remove substance using the step-by-step technique for reliable, reproducible results. The OS-discs are only authorized for use in the oscillating contra-angle OS30.

In the introductory part of his presentation,
Dr. Oliver Etienne explains the two main causes for worn
dentition, in other words, massive loss of hard dental substance. One major
reason is bruxism which is caused by stress. According to the relevant
literature, 10 % to 13 % of adults grind their teeth at night while they are
asleep. During the day, the percentage is even higher. Dentists are more and
more often faced with the symptoms of bruxism: attritions and an imbalanced
occlusion.

Worn dentition can also be triggered off by erosion. To support this, Dr. Etienne quotes some studies showing that nowadays, almost 30 % of adults in Europe suffer from erosion, for example caused by excessive consumption of soft drinks containing sugar or anorexia etc. In his presentation, Dr. Etienne presents a few typical case studies, for example of patients with worn dentition caused by a combination of bruxism and erosion.

How to treat worn dentition correctly

In mild cases of worn dentition, direct composite restorations are the first choice. In cases of severe loss of healthy dental substance, however, indirect restorations are the only treatment method that covers all prosthetic aspects (wax-up, mock up). This is the only way to recreate the vertical dimension of the occlusion. Dr. Etienne likes to work with the special instruments from the Perfect Veneer Preparation (PVP) set 4686/ST and the Occlusal Onlay Set 4665/ST during preparation for indirect veneer restorations. He is very impressed with the ideas of the two German inventors Dr. Ahlers and Prof. Dr. Edelhoff, for example the depth markers 868BP with uncoated guide pin. These instruments prevent an undesirable penetration too deeply into the enamel and ensure that the predefined shape is observed.

In his presentation, Dr. Etienne also presents the OccluShaper 370. Thanks to its special shape, the instrument does not leave any sharp edges and prepares a wavy occlusal shape. “With the OccluShaper, the enamel prisms are cut orthogonally, contrary to V-shaped preparations where they are cut in a parallel pattern. The wavy shape creates the ideal conditions for the subsequent bonding”, says Dr. Etienne.

A shiny finish

At the end of his presentation, Dr. Etienne recommends the set 4637 for final polishing. The set was developed for trimming and polishing ceramic restorations such as zirconium or lithium silicate. The ZR abrasives are distinguished by their impressive removal capacity. They are perfectly complemented by Art2 polishers for two-step polishing. These polishers polish indirect restorations to a natural looking high shine in just two steps.

The procedure shown in the presentation is
without a doubt the currently most elegant way of treating worn dentition. However, when it comes to fighting the
above described causes, i.e. bruxism and erosion, the onus is still on the
patient.

Traditional bite splints are an integral part of the daily work at the dental laboratory. Bite splints are usually created in the laboratory or at the dental practice, either digitally or according to a deep-drawing method. So far, so good. But during fast, thorough work you might experience a little “crunching“ every now and then.

What cutters do I need? How do I use them and in what order? These questions and many more are answered by the new splint set 4676A. This new set only focuses on those instruments that are actually needed for creating bite guards and bite splints. Easily manageable and clearly structured, the set 4676A covers all indications from the creation of new splints to small corrections and adaptions.

The highlight of the set is the new acrylic cutter that perfectly complements the splint set 4676A. Thanks to its particularly thin working part, it facilitates much finer, more precise work. Rework of the splint edges can be reduced to a minimum.

The well thought-out set only contains seven tools required for trimming and polishing – all you need to complete your work in record time. What could be easier?

Do you know Curling? A strange, but inspiring game where players have to slide heavy stones across a sheet of ice towards a goal. During the game, two members of the team, the so-called sweepers, polish the ice to a smooth surface to make sure that the stone slides across the ice with perfect ease. The success of the team largely depends on the efforts of the sweepers, they have to cooperate in perfect harmony. Just like the lamellae of our two-step polishers.

A very smooth surface is a decisive factor for the success of dental restorations because it minimizes the abrasion at the antagonist. This is where our two-step polishers come into play: They are a perfectly matched team where each member knows exactly what to do.

The polishers are provided with several lamellae that support and stabilize each other during rotation. As a result, they remain flexible while their service life is extended. Able to adapt to almost any anatomic surface, these polishers polish occlusal, labial, buccal and interproximal areas to a high gloss in no time at all. A beautiful shine is already achieved after the first polishing step (blue) which is then topped by the high-gloss finished obtained during the second step (gray).

In short, our new polishers for all-ceramic and zirconium oxide restorations allow you to score points where winning is important every day: in the dental laboratory.

All team members at the dental practice are under constant time pressure. Every work step has to be spot-on, time is precious and must not be wasted, the countdown to the next job has already started before the last one is done. Although necessary, some work steps are perceived as particularly annoying because they are so tedious and time consuming – for example polishing.

The choice of polishers is huge, and it is often difficult to define the perfect solution at a glance. This is where Komet comes in: with Art2, a two-step polishing system that makes your daily routine easier and more effective. A perfect polishing result in just two steps – whatever the application, whatever the material.
